Peru's Relief Map (1)

Location:

Peru is located in western South America, and is bordered by Ecuador and Colombia on the north, by Chile on the south, by Brazil on the east, and by the South Pacific Ocean on the west.

Size:

Peru's 1,326,074 square kilometers (512,000 square miles) make it roughly the size of Alaska. (2) I've visited Alaska a couple of time and though Peru may be the size of Alaska, boy is it totally opposite in climate. I don't think I would like to be in either place to long.

Terrain:

I find it interesting to import into AutoCAD (r) the existing terrain so that we can layout the design of seepage channels and embankment berms and then to actually see photos of the area, makes it all come to life.

The Spanish divided Peru into 3 regions to keep things simple. In 1941 a geographer named Javier Pulgar Vidal, felt it needed to be more detailed and divided it into eight regions. I will only talk about the three simple regions.

Sierra Highlands (3)

The three simple regions are described as follows:
The first region is along the coast the area is dry except for valleys created by rainy seasons. The sierra (highlands) is the region of the Andes; it includes the Altiplano plateau as well as the highest peak of the country, the 6,768 m (22,205 ft) Huascarán. (3) The third region, which is 60% of the country is a flat jungle and rainforest that extends to the eastern plains.

Most of the rivers are steep and short and drain towards the Pacific Ocean. Peru’s longest rivers are the Ucayali, the Marañón, the Putumayo, the Yavarí, the Huallaga, the Urubamba, the Mantaro, and the Amazon. (3) Amazon River are longer, have a much larger flow, and are less steep once they exit the sierra. (3)
